BIODIVERSITY NET GAIN (BNG)
What is Biodiversity Net Gain?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a mandatory requirement for all developments coming under the Town and Country Planning Act to achieve a measurable gain in biodiversity of at least 10% over and above the baseline of their site. This land is set aside for BNG and protected, monitored, and managed for 30 years. The aim of the legislation is to halt and reverse the decline of nature in England, by creating excellent habitats for wildlife above and beyond that which is lost during a development.

In England, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is mandatory since February 2024 under Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of the Environment Act 2021). Developers must deliver a BNG of 10%.

It is not always possible for the necessary biodiversity net gain to be met on the development site. Where this is the case, Eco-logical Landscapes can provide a complete service to ensure that you can fulfil your BNG requirements at an offsite location. This could take the form of:

-
Purchase of BNG units from one of our established habitat banks
-
Design and implimentation of habitats where a bespoke approach is needed

Biodiversity Net Gain Units
Ecological Landscapes Biodiversity Net Gain units are an offsite, fully managed product that will ensure you meet your environmental commitments. For developers this is a straight forward and cost effective transaction that ensures that you meet your biodiversity net gain requirements. We take responsibility for all subsequent land management and ecological reporting.
For landowners it is a meaningful way to diversify income from your land. Lease your land for biodiversity net gain credits whilst protecting it for nature. Our environmental team will enrich your land and ensure that nature thrives for a period of 30 years. We'll simplify this process for you and get you a great price.
Nitrate Mitigation
What is Nitrate Mitigation?
Nutrient mitigation is the process of ensuring that new planning applications can reach nitrate neutrality with the aim of protecting water quality in surrounding bodies of water. Natural England advise that a nutrient budget must be created for applicable planning applications, this will then be used to determine the correct nitrate mitigation strategy. The relevant LPA will take into account the nutrient budget and suggested nitrate mitigation method when deciding whether to grant planning permission. Landowners in appropriate areas (normally close to bodies of water) can lease their land for nitrate mitigation.
Nutrient Mitigation Credits
When nutrient mitigation cannot be successfully provided onsite, nitrate mitigation credits can be used. It is essential that the land that the credits are connected to is close to the proposed development, and connected to the same waterways. Specialist ecological knowledge and local know how are essential to secure the right nitrate mitigation credits for your project. Our team have expertise and nitrate mitigation credits available for West Sussex & Hampshire. Contact us now for further information.
